Punjab Tourist Places: Know What to See & Skip & Plan Your Trip Without Wasting a Day

Most Punjab trip guides hand you a list of ten places and leave the hard part to you. How many can you actually fit in? What should come first? What if you only have a weekend?
This guide works the other way round. Look at the options that best fit your condition, and you will know where exactly you need to head among the Punjab tourist places.
Question: Where to Begin?
Base yourself in Amritsar. Most of the major Punjab tourist places are close enough that you can stay in one hotel and skip the repacking and the traffic.
Not sure which Punjab tourist places to pick? Match it to your trip:
| If you want… | Go to |
| A spiritual experience | Golden Temple, Akal Takht, Tarn Taran Sahib |
| History | Jallianwala Bagh, Partition Museum, Gobindgarh Fort |
| Punjabi culture and food | Sadda Pind |
| Fewer crowds, a slower pace | Durgiana Temple, Ram Tirath Temple |
“I Only Have One Day. What Should I Do?”
The high points can be covered but not too quickly since you want to select what’s important.
- Morning: Golden Temple and Akal Takht, which opens at about 4:00 AM, and you should get there early because then it will be less crowded.
- Mid-morning: Jallianwala Bagh, which is nearby; you don’t want to rush through it.
- Afternoon: Partition Museum (between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, 1 to 2 hours needed).
- Evening: Wagah-Attari Beating Retreat Ceremony.
Temples and forts should not be covered on this itinerary. Trying to add them is what turns a good day into a tiring one.
“I Have Two Days. What’s the Best Split?”
This way is the most comfortable for all.
- Day 1: Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, and Partition Museum. All these three sites are very close and could be covered very well in one heavy day.
- Day 2: Gobindgarh Fort, Durgiana Temple, and Wagah. The Gobindgarh Fort should be visited in the afternoon and Durgiana Temple in the evening time.
“I Have Three Days or More”
A day trip must be included in the schedule, but make sure that it is independent and not connected with the tour of Amritsar:
- Virasat-e-Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib for experiencing the cultural and historical background of Sikhs and Punjab. This should not be included in any other trip since it needs a separate day.
- Tarn Taran Sahib for a serene experience spiritually, and this place can be visited both in the morning and evening.
- The Ram Tirath Temple for someone who wants to have some solitude and would like to avoid the chaos of the city.
Place by Place: What to Know Before You Go
Golden Temple and Akal Takht. The point of the place is the sarovar, the kirtan and the langar, not pictures. Working hours: 4:00 am – 11:00 pm. Please make sure you have covered your head and shoes off. Also, follow internal rules.

Jallianwala Bagh. The monument for the events that took place on 13 April 1919, where the British troops shot at the crowd. Working hours: 6:30 am – 7:30 pm. Do not forget that working hours can be different.

Partition Museum. In Amritsar’s old Town Hall, with photographs, belongings and first-hand accounts. Closed on Mondays.
Gobindgarh Fort. Related to Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the British era, with museums and cultural attractions located within it. Timings are approximately between 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Performances have their separate schedule; please find out.

Durgiana Temple. Located in the centre of a sarovar and is believed by tourists to resemble the Golden Temple. Timings are approximately between 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Evening is the best time.
Sadda Pind. Cultural attractions in the village setting with food specialties, crafts, cultural performances, and music. Good for families and a change from the museum experience. Find out the price and timing first.
Wagah-Attari Border. An evening parade of soldiers of both India and Pakistan with the Beating Retreat performance before the gates close. Please arrive in advance and carry valid ID along with leaving unnecessary baggage at home.

Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
- Scheduling a partition museum visit on Monday. It is closed. Choose another day.
- Arriving late to Wagah. It is very crowded, so do not come at the last minute.
- Relying on outdated timetables. They change quite often, particularly for Jallianwala Bagh and Wagah. Check on the day.
- Cramming Anandpur Sahib between Amritsar stops. Give it a separate day.
- Too many Punjab tourist places in one day. Choose less and enjoy.
- Forgetting to cover one’s head. Make sure that you have a scarf with you whenever you visit any gurdwara.
- Ignoring the traffic. Maintain some distance between your places to avoid rush.
What To Eat
- Don’t come back from here without eating:
- Amritsari kulcha
- Chole
- Aloo paratha
- Lassi
- Sarson da saag with makki di roti
- Also, make sure you dine at the Golden Temple langar which provides a free vegetarian meal to all sitting together and sharing their food.
- In case you have time, you may even volunteer there.
When Should You Visit?
The period between October and March is the best to visit. The winters are cold but still good to explore Punjab tourist places. Both May and June are too hot. In case of traveling during those periods, one should sightsee during mornings or evenings.
Pre-Visit Checklist
- Scarf or head covering for gurdwaras
- Easy-to-remove footwear
- Valid ID for Wagah
- Current timings and entry fees
- Latest Wagah ceremony rules
- Extra time for traffic
An effective schedule doesn’t always mean that it has the most number of destinations in it. Plan according to your preferences, leave time for having food and taking detours, and you will have pleasant memories of your travel forever.
